Artist Statement
I started taking pictures a few years ago when I got tired of looking at the blank walls of my office. Most of my weekends were spent hiking in the Los Padres National Forest and I wanted to take a bit of that weekend back with me. I needed something to remind me of what was outside my office like the wide-open spaces and the sound of the wind blowing through the pine trees
One of the first things I noticed when I started taking pictures there was that the ‘intimate landscapes’ better captured the feel of the location I went to than the ‘grand vistas’. To me, a single waterfall captures the feel of a place better than a tremendous mountain range.
Since I’ve become interested in photography I’ve learned how to take shots of the larger views, but I find myself going back to the intimate landscapes on a regular basis. Even when I’m shooting non-landscape scenes, like my Monarch series, I still find myself adhering to the concept of just a few butterflies and just a few leaves. As you peruse my photographs, I hope that you not only see, but also feel, the beauty that I tried to capture.
